The most common form of license is one bought with hardware, usually the operating system and MS Office. They come pre-installed and people don’t have to think beyond that. For small companies (with less than 10 or 15 employees), who typically are not growing fast and only change PC’s every three to four years, this type of license is apt and cost-effective.
Microsoft has several volume licensing programs available to help customers organise their licenses, stay up to date, and receive savings. Volume Licensing includes Open (MOLP), Open Value, Open Value Subscription, Select and Enterprise Agreements
This is, in essence, a rental agreement which offers advantages to customers such as access to the latest versions of Microsoft products, simplified license tracking, streamlined ordering processes and possible tax benefits. Customer must purchase one of the following platform products to enter such an agreement: Office Small Business Edition, Office Professional, Office Enterprise, Vista Upgrade, CAL’s for Small Business Server, CAL’s for Essentials Server or CORE CAL.
